Language Skills

Language and verbal skills are very important for a child’s reading ability. In order to enlarge them a parent must engage in a lot of conversation with your child.  In expressing themselves, a child demonstrates his knowledge and ideas, what is on his mind, and how he sees the world. This can be very instructive and also very amusing as the chatter goes on. But also important is their use of vocabulary. A child must become familiar with language in order to create an ever expanding reading foundation.

While you two read books, please ask her questions about it…What do you think will happen next? What is your favorite character in this story? Is this an interesting book for you? Why? Do you like stories about animals or people? etc.

And keep the chatter going here and there on whatever level is appropiate. Acknowledge them, get on their physical level as you speak with them, take their comments seriously, …really!…is that what you think or how you feel? I like that, or  I never thought of that before…very good. Sit on the bed with them, and just play and talk. Talk to their animals on the bed. Play cards (UNO is a good one,) and just visit with them as you play. Have a daily card champion. Enjoy his company, and he will enjoy yours. Read the cereal boxes together. Look at the clouds and the birds outside…whatever interests him as his vocabulary is expanding. He will later recognize these words in print.

Childrens’ Literacy

For a child to not be able to read has terrible repercussions. Without proficient reading skills, a child cannot participate in our work, economic or civic lives. Lack of literacy skills robs a person and also our nation of the good work of each citizen, and is one of the causes of social unrest and inequality. I feel that it is the birthright of every child to be able to read no matter his or her background or I.Q. What has taken so long to fully understand this? Poor statistics show that there is still a very big misunderstanding of this challenge, and what can be accomplished.

What can be done about it? How can you make sure that your child fully understands the process of reading? The answers are many. Parents teaching their children at home by their side is my preferred way where the parent knows full well their skill levels and how to advance them in a very easy manner. And there are other resources such as preschool attendance where reading is emphasized, the parent demanding higher teacher quality and lower class size, quick intervention for struggling learners, summer school, tutors, and a very important factor is for a mother and the family to be fully aware of the benefits of literacy and the value of an education.

Not everyone values or even understands what the value of an education or what high achievement can really mean. Big Problem, and I don’t have an answer for this one! I do remember one high school teacher say on the first day of class as he held up two pictures. One was of a trailer and a beat up car in a not so good part of town, while the other one was of a nice house and a nice car. Which one do you want to live in, he asked. The class all said the nice house and car. O.K. good. Well pay attention to what you learn here because this is what will get you there. A very worthy, pointed and practical reason for education.

First Big Step

I encourage parents to have a very positive expectation for your child’s educational future, and the easy reading instructions in my book, PRESCHOOL READING SUCCESS IN JUST FIVE MINUTES A DAY is a great start which most definitely speaks to your child’s future schooling success. Please impart an invisible sense of positive energy to your child that he or she is smart, clever, and will easily understand reading as you slip in easy instruction here and there throughout the day that I fully describe in my book … no big deal…no stress… no anxiety. In fact, my approach is not pedantic, stultified, or boring. Your child will understand and “get it” if you discover the correct (hilarious, energetic, meaningful, plain funny) words to demonstrate the initial phonic sounds you are teaching with an upbeat approach. It will feel so natural to both of you as you impart a very positive attitude to learning in general with reading as a first big step.

A Reading Child’s Future

Illiteracy leads to more political control while devastating a child’s learning future. We need all of our citizens educated and thoughtful. Yes, the mind is a terrible thing to waste. The beginning of national freedom is an educated citizenry, and it starts with reading and it can start early in childhood. If two thirds of children are not reading by the fourth grade, how will they learn, and when will they be taught? …by their equally distressed peers, a sense of failure in school that drags them down, by all of the hi tech distractions, by the internet, by late night comedy shows, by the media, by TV and movies that have destructive messages, by a drug or alcohol culture, WHAT? …What a huge and destructive deficit! Let’s teach them to read as early as possible, so that their God given minds and brilliance are opened to the wonders of this life, to original and creative thinking, to their natural talents, to true beauty, and to  the joys of a well lived and educated life. But this mode of life must start early. We needs all of ours minds working in a productive way to help our country and to help the world.

An Engaged Parent or Grandparent needed for just a few minutes

The many and very positive comments and reviews for my book, Preschool Reading Success in Just 5 Minutes A day have become very motivating to me. The more I read about the dismal literacy rates in this country, the more determined I am to spread this information to as many people as possible. The basic concepts for learning to read are so easy that I need to emphasize that this doesn’t have to be a monumental task to either teach it or for a child to learn it. This is wonderful news. There is no need for so called highly advanced teaching methods, no work books, no DVDs, or other needless concerns. The real need, however, is a highly engaged, energetic and committed in-the-moment parent or grandparent to playfully introduce and teach the basic phonic sounds that have meaning to your child. But it is done in such a silly and stress-free manner and in only a few minutes, that it really isn’t a chore, and even makes connecting with your child more genuinely rewarding.

Parents and Grandparents

At home, it is the parents and grandparents reading to your children and teaching them how to read before they go to school that makes an incalculable difference. The ability to read is your gift to them that will lead to ongoing school and life success. Embrace them in your arms as you teach and read to them.

The ability to read will obviously educate them, but will also give them the exhilarating sense of early success in school which can carry them to future successes.  Reading will become their window to the world that will allow them to engage their imagination and sense of adventure, and to bring inspiration to connect to the larger themes in life. “The child who reads is the child who thinks” is a quotation we can all embrace.

Phonics, vocabulary, and fluency of speech all contribute to their being able to read. Their beginning teachers in school will appreciate the work that you are giving to them now, and they will picture them as highly intelligent and ready to learn. Their comments will go on their record which will follow them all through their schooling years.

As a start, look up some of the animals on the computer or books from the library that they enjoy which will engage and develop his or her awareness…ostriches, flying fish, giraffes, otters, parrots, monkeys etc as well as the suggestions in my book.  Reading ability is expanding her awareness of the world around her. Early childhood learning, and especially reading ability are so important for your child’s future development.
